Roco Rescue Essentials™ is the foundational class for urban and industrial technical rescuers. Firefighters in big city fire departments, workers dedicated to providing confined space rescue in industrial plants, offshore oil platform personnel as well as suburban and volunteer firefighters will be challenged by the high-performance curriculum. Roco’s Rescue Essentials is a hands-on serious approach to a serious subject preparing rescuers who respond to emergencies ranging from the depths of a confined space to the heights of an elevated structure or industrial platform.
Rescuers will spend most of the class in the field with on-rope time optimized every day. Personal rope skills, knot craft, mechanical advantage and patient packaging will be emphasized using gear picked by our experienced instructor cadre from the best manufacturers in the world. Participants will also perform realistic rescues of suspended workers and workers trapped in confined spaces.
Rescue Essentials™ open-enrollment courses take place at the Roco Training Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. For courses conducted at the Roco Training Center (or as the training location permits), participants will practice rescue operations from all six (6) confined space types. Rescue operations from simulated IDLH atmospheres requiring the use of breathing air (SCBA) will also be included. These realistic scenarios can be used to document the minimum annual practice requirements required by OSHA and NFPA.
Compliance Note: OSHA 1910.146 Permit Required Confined Space regulation requires all rescue team members to practice making permit space rescues at least once every 12 months from actual or representative confined spaces. OSHA has approved Roco’s Types Chart, which classifies these representative spaces into six (6) confined space types for rescue planning and practice purposes. NFPA 1006 requires individual rescuers to demonstrate rescue competency on an annual basis, and NFPA 1670 states that rescue teams must undergo an annual performance evaluation.

“ANSI Z359 as well as OSHA 1926.502(d)(20) require employers to provide the prompt rescue of employees in the event of a fall, or assure that employees are able to perform self-rescue.”
Roco’s Rescue From Fall Protection training is designed for safety and simplicity while minimizing exposure to the rescuer. This 20-hour course will train workers for safe and effective “self-rescue” when possible and prepare them for “assisted rescue” when required. The course includes hands-on techniques for rescuing a co-worker who is suspended from a personal fall arrest system (PFAS). Team rescue operations will be presented in order to prevent or minimize suspension trauma hazards for fallen workers. Special emphasis will be placed on self-rescue, assisted rescue, line transfers, descent control systems, lowering techniques, haul systems, and the hazards of suspension trauma. Safe, simple techniques will be used along with the latest and most effective equipment. Pros and cons of the various systems will be thoroughly covered.

A real emergency demands rescue proficiency. To maintain proficiency, refresher training and regular practice drills are vital. OSHA 1910.146 requires that rescue team members practice making permit space rescues at least once every 12 months from actual or representative confined spaces. NFPA 1670 states that teams must undergo an annual performance evaluation, and NFPA 1006 says individuals shall demonstrate competency on an annual basis. Roco’s Compliance Rescue Refresher™ course includes hands-on practice as well as problem-solving confined space and elevated scenarios to keep your team updated and prepared for response. To maintain individual skills as well as team proficiency, we recommend monthly “in-house” practice combined with quarterly sessions.

NFPA 1670 states that teams must undergo an annual performance evaluation, and NFPA 1006 says individuals shall demonstrate competency on an annual basis. OSHA 1910.146 has minimum annual practice requirements using realistic scenarios in the types of confined spaces from which rescue may be required.
A Roco Team Performance Evaluation (TPE™) simulates the pressures of emergency response while providing third-party documentation of your team’s rescue capabilities. Graded scenarios are used to evaluate safe, timely and proficient response in confined space and elevated rescue environments. Each scenario is debriefed so that any deficiencies can be identified and corrected. Teams are scored on their rescue skills, response capabilities and patient care.
A written report documents confined space types completed, highlights strengths and identifies opportunities for improvement. For TPEs conducted at the Roco Training Center, all six (6) confined space types are included. For on-site sessions, available confined spaces located within the team’s response area will be used for the evaluation.
Call 800-647-7626 to schedule a TPE at your site or at the Roco Training Center.
